Engagement photos in Laguna Beach could not be a more perfect location to document photos that feel candid and whimsical with a coastal backdrop. The Orange County coastline has an abundance of hidden coves and nature trails that truly feel otherworldly at times, especially when the sun hangs low over the water. Couples, let me hold your hand when I say this… it is CRUCIAL to have your Laguna Beach engagement pictures on a weekday. Preferably an off-season weekday. Even more preferably, a Monday-Thursday date. Why? Simple, Laguna Beach is not a “hidden gem” despite what the TikTok girlies say. Laguna Beach is a destination. In the summer, it is functionally the Positano of Orange County. Have you ever seen tourist photos from Positano in mid-July? It is standing room only. Same applies to Laguna Beach. These engagement photos were taken in Laguna Beach on a Friday afternoon in April, and we still navigated some crowds. Prime time for a quiet, less-crowded experience will be those off peak dates mentioned above. A general rule of thumb when planning engagement photos at any beach: the hotter it gets, the busier it gets.

You might be thinking, we’re confident people! We don’t care about crowds! Yes, you do. They will be in the back of your photos. Personally, I am committed to photoshopping out (most of) the beachgoers, but within reason. There are some situations which are very tough to salvage even with Lightroom AI. The level of editing required is very time-consuming. Trust me, everyone is going to feel better if there’s less people around during your engagement photos.

Another hot tip on beach engagement photos- they don’t always need to be at sunset. The sunnier photos in the set featured in this blog post took place around 5pm, a few hours before sunset. It would be quite possible to start engagement photos even closer to 3 or 3:30pm during daylight savings time. While you won’t have as much of that golden glowy light, the brighter sunshine creates those saturated blues and greens in the ocean. Really perfect scenario if you’re the type to explore tide pools or possibly even dip in the sea during your engagement session!

Before you start your engagement session in Laguna Beach, you should be examining the tide schedule. This is very easy to find online. Many of the smaller coves in Laguna Beach that are most picturesque have limited amounts of sand. At high tide, the water can come all the way up to the rocks and sometimes even the stairway down to the beach. Essentially, if the tide is too high, there is no beach! You’ll be wading up to your knees in the shallowest part of the water. It can be a huge safety issue if the current is strong. Tide research is crucial to planning a great engagement session in Laguna.

One of the most important elements of Laguna Beach engagement photos is making the session a fun and easy experience for everyone involved. That includes folks who are at the beach, enjoying the sun, who have nothing at all to do with your engagement pictures. If you’re envisioning a highly styled engagement session with lights and stands and props, it is critical to get a permit that will allow you private access to part of the beach. It’s important to always be kind and not act like you own the place just because you’re taking photos there. I really stress kindness to people and the beach environment because I care so much about this place and want it to remain beautiful and accessible!

Laguna Beach engagement pictures feel inherently so romantic and full of possibility. From the rocky coves to the lush plants to all the charming little streets lined with cafes, there are so many ways you could enjoy this area as a couple. As long as you’re willing to be flexible, relaxed, and focus on being present with your person to frolic and enjoy this stunning area, your engagement pictures will be a breeze! I’ve personally had the incredible fortune to experience a lot of coastlines all over the world, but time and again, I’m blown away by the beauty in Laguna Beach just down the road from my house.
