Courtney and Jeremy’s romantic spring Birchwood Room wedding at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, CA felt whimsical, warm, and welcoming.

Opting for an intimate celebration, the couple wanted their Calamigos Ranch wedding day to feel private and surrounded by natural beauty. The combination of soft, golden sunlight filtering through the trees along with delicate wildflower arrangements grounded the ceremony and created a breathtaking atmosphere. At reception, guests dined under chandeliers suspended from the oak tree branches for a truly magical al fresco experience. Every detail and decision made this wedding at the Birchwood Room in Malibu felt uniquely like Courtney and Jeremy!

After my experience at several Calamigos Ranch wedding venues, the Birchwood Room stands out to me because of the incredible natural light. It’s almost as if the venue builders positioned the area perfectly for the sun’s trajectory throughout the afternoon to highlight all of the natural beauty. With ample foliage surrounding the ceremony and reception space, the sun slips through the tree branches softly, creating a golden-hour sunset kind of glow for several hours in the afternoon. This warm glow combined with shafts of light feels so cinematic both in person and on camera. A photographer’s dream!

If you are looking to host a small, intimate wedding celebration, the Birchwood Room is a perfect choice. While the Birchwood Room can host up to 120 guests (the most intimate venue choice out of all the Calamigos Ranch wedding venues!), I think having 80 or less feels comfortable and cozy. A smaller guest count often allows couples to more deeply connect with each person who attends their wedding, and the Birchwood Room offers a secluded, woodland environment ideal for celebrating. The layout is ideal with space for ceremony and an adjacent cocktail hour while the wooden deck above allows for an outdoor dinner under the canopy of trees and fairy lights. Guest traffic flow is worth thinking about, and the flow here is seamless.

One common issue wedding couples face in Southern California is searching for a wedding venue that feels private and tucked away. The Birchwood Room at Calamigos Ranch completely solves this concern. Surrounded by trees and positioned further back away from other venues at Calamigos, entering Birchwood feels like a magical woodland escape from reality. Zero traffic noise or ambient sound from other celebrations impacts a wedding at Birchwood despite the fact that there is lodging only a 3 minute walk from the ceremony space. Convenient, yet quiet, I highly recommend this venue for the logistics and aesthetics.

For Courtney and Jeremy, they opted to start their Malibu wedding ceremony at 6pm which was about 90 minutes before sunset in spring 2026. The timing for natural sunlight could not have been more perfect! The sun slowly lowered during their ceremony through the trees behind them which looked absolutely stunning. Aside from their voices and the sound of the violinist playing, the whole environment was completely still. As the sun faded and the guests transitioned to reception, the sky turned a deep blue color contrasted with the warm hanging chandeliers. It only faded completely dark once everyone went inside for dancing, so the schedule was ideal. The weather was gentle and warm, completely temperate. A May wedding at Calamigos Ranch really couldn’t be better.

Another major tip for a smooth wedding experience at Calamigos Ranch is to stay onsite in one of their suites near Birchwood Room. Courtney and her gals got ready in one of the guest rooms with floor to ceiling windows and a private deck. Top tier convenience to pop in and out of the room as needed for her touchups. It was only a short walk to every photo location we visited. The natural light and foliage surrounding the getting ready space added to the ambience of the morning. Spa-like and serene, the getting ready room truly set the tone for the whole wedding day to run smoothly.

Great news: It’s hard to take bad wedding photos at this Malibu wedding venue! Great photos are always going to be dependent on the light at different hours of the day. However, I can outline exactly what worked for Courtney and Jeremy’s wedding in May at Birchwood Room.
For getting ready photos in the early afternoon at the Calamigos Ranch guest suites, the tree coverage offered plenty of shade on the private patio. Courtney stepped onto the deck in her white robe for a few photos in her first look of the day. Simple, clean light in this neutral, aesthetic environment really set the tone for how peaceful and serene this wedding day felt.

After Courtney’s first look with her dad on the walkway adjacent to the getting ready suite, she stepped back into her room for a moment. On the way, I captured this sweet and completely candid moment of her turning back to smile at her dad. The sun peeked through the branches and perfectly illuminated Courtney in that moment! The mixture of shade and sun through the trees offered so much variety. Each location felt special and slightly different from the last.

Courtney and Jeremy shared their first look in a tree-lined tunnel directly next to the Calamigos guest suites. While this area is probably too small for wedding party photos, it is perfect for moments with the couple. The environment felt incredibly romantic. Almost like we were transported to a garden in Paris for their first moment seeing each other at the wedding. Lots of happy tears shed here, and the backdrop felt lush and dreamy for photos!

From first look, we maneuvered the wedding party towards the Birchwood Room to capture more romantics and family photos. The wood deck wraps around the Birchwood Room at Calamigos Ranch. It felt private and like a small escape from the joyful chaos of the wedding. Courtney and Jeremy joined me on the deck for a few more photos together as a couple. This deck turned out to be another exceptional photo location at the Birchwood Room. I would highly recommend for pictures on a wedding day. The sun is perfectly positioned behind the deck to allow for little flares of light to peek through the leaves.

Family photos at the ceremony site felt completely natural. Aside from the delicate wildflowers framing the ceremony altar, trees covered the background making the space feel like a true woodland clearing. The light once again was soft and ambient behind the wedding party which landed softly on everyone’s faces for a clean and even portrait.

This is hardly an exhaustive list of where to take wedding photos around Calamigos Ranch. Other great locations include the tunnels covered in greenery and fairy lights. Alternately, the getting ready space above Birchwood Room that overlooks reception. Finally, anywhere at night underneath the hanging lights and chandeliers. This place is a photographer’s paradise!
