Sam and Aaden’s motorcycle engagement photos in San Clemente highlighted their adventurous, fun relationship! It’s common for “engagement photos” to come with connotations of standing in a field you’ve never visited before smiling stiffly for the camera. Let’s ditch this stereotype and opt for photos that show off your real life together! Aaden and Sam got creative, and you can too.
Aaden and Sam met while working on staff together at a local summer camp, and truly, the rest is history. Aaden is actually my brother-in-law, so I’ve watched him grow up and become a complete daredevil outdoorsman. From the first time he introduced Sam to all of us, we were floored by how many interests they share. Surfing, camping, skateboarding, brewery-hopping, hiking, snowboarding, fishing, dirt biking…any sport that headlines equipment at REI is in their wheelhouse. They are a bonded pair, a match made in heaven. These two did not want to stand around for an endless staged photoshoot. I knew their engagement pictures (or rather, anti-engagement pictures) needed to be active.
In addition to dirt biking, Aaden acquired a Harley-Davidson motorcycle partly for riding and partly for rehabilitating. After fixing it up, he showed me the progress. I immediately knew the bike had to be part of their photos. In true Aaden and Sam fashion, they prefer to bike instead of hop in a car any day. A Sunday afternoon often consists of a cruise down PCH on the motorcycle together, searching for the perfect wave.
When it came to where we’d shoot their photos, Aaden and Sam picked a nearby beach where they both grew up visiting with their families. We took off from my in-laws’ house and headed down. The word that floats into my mind when I think back on this day is “organic.” From my arrival, I got to witness them prepare for takeoff together just like they do on any normal day. Even putting on socks and shoes and helmets made it into the gallery.
Nothing about Aaden and Sam feels forced. Glad that free-flowing element made it into their photographs. I guess you can be the judge from here!
Not everyone wants to do motorcycle engagement photos in San Clemente, I get it. This made sense for Aaden and Sam. Only you know what makes sense for you. Need help deciding? In the process of planning every engagement session, I share a guide packed with ideas and advice to get your creative juices flowing. Most importantly, choose a way to celebrate and honor your unique relationship. Is your connection founded on food? Whip up some pancakes in the kitchen and have it documented! Are you big into boats? Let’s go down to the harbor so you can zip around! Rather than thinking of these as “engagement photos,” think about it more like a choose your own adventure kind of day.
As always, I photographed these pictures on a mixture of film and digital cameras. Do you love these motorcycle engagement photos in San Clemente?
